Rest is more than just sleep. It’s time taken to take care of your body, mind, and soul. It’s allowing yourself to take a moment, relax, and breathe. All of this is just as important as sleep. Now one the subject of sleep. You do need it. I know you hear that all the time, but for good reason. It’s true! Without adequate sleep your body can’t function to it’s fullest potential. You should try to get at least 5-6 hours of sleep a night. More if you can.
College is an amazing time in most people lives. It’s where we make lifelong friendships, start our future, and really, truly find our place in the world. We spend our time going to class, working, doing homework, and trying to keep up with our social lives and basic hygiene. It can be difficult and stressful. And that’s why rest is so important. People rest in many different ways and there is no one right way. However, there is a best way for each individual person. The way you rest and relax is as unique as you. Whatever your way is find time each day to do it. We move at a constant rate. Hour to hour we spend busy, hurrying on to the next task or place. And as important as all these things are, your body can’t function properly if it is tired.
Time often keeps us from properly taking care of ourselves. Sometimes we feel as though we can’t stop and take a break because if we do we won’t get everything done. This is perfectly understandable and seemingly a good reason. But it’s not enough. Staying up all night to study for a test won’t do you much good if you are too tired the next day to concentrate. Trust me I have been there. At a certain point you just have to be comfortable with what you do know, turn the lights off, get some sleep, and look things over again in the morning. This is more than acceptable
You shouldn’t feel bad about taking a small nap or going for a walk. If that’s what your body needs, so be it. You have to do what is best for you. You are often less productive if you are tired or stressed. Allowing yourself a few moments to yourself is absolutely one of the best ways to ensure that you are at your best. You are more likely to be able to focus and concentrate and do your best work. Don’t feel guilty for taking that time.
Not only does it help you focus and give your best effort, but rest is also important for your overall health. Not getting enough sleep and being too stressed can have both short term and long term effects on your body and mind. The toll exhaustion plays on you is damaging and can cause you to burn out rather quickly. You are more likely to get sick, which can cause more problems than taking that time each day.
So take some time for yourself. You will thank yourself later. Not resting can be very damaging and hurt you in the long run. Open your schedule a little bit. It doesn’t matter if you do it in the morning, afternoon, or at night before bed. Whenever works best for you.
