Hey guys! Welcome back. A little while back I remember someone told me “you will choose to rest or you will be forced to”. This was back in the middle of the semester when I was stressed and trying to get so many things done. I didn’t really think about it much at the time, but looking back, I realize they were right. It may seem silly, but I never really considered this to be true before now. But it is. I can choose to rest and relax now, or I can wait until I am mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted and drained and be forced to rest.

When I am in school, most of my rest is forced rest. I either get sick or become so exhausted that I physically and mentally just can’t do anything. Anxious, stressed, overwhelmed, and struggling I just fall apart. I had to learn how to rest and give myself a break. But then I learned this summer that it is not exclusive to when I am in school. I do it when I’m at home as well. I get so busy working on things and trying to meet unrealistic deadlines that I literally make myself sick with anxiety and worry.

When I start getting really anxious and worrying myself, I get really bad pains in my stomach and I get really sick. I used to think it was something else, but that’s what it is. Giving myself even more anxiety is extremely stressful and really harmful to my body. And I have learned when that happens, I just have to sleep. Sleeping is the only thing that helps settle my stomach and ease the pain and sickness.

I’ve learned to remember that rest is a gift. We were not created to go non-stop with no breaks in between. Even God himself rested on the seventh day. Because of this I have decided to start making rest a regular priority. It may seem strange that it wasn’t before, but it’s true. I didn’t rest when I should have. So now whenever I feel anxious, I take a break. I walk away and allow myself to focus on something else. I’ve learned just how important it is to be gentle to myself and my body.

I’m sure there will be both chosen and forced rest in the future, but I am still a work in progress. I will never be perfect. But I challenge you to take a look at the way you rest. Is it mostly chosen or mostly forced? It may change some things when you figure it out. I hope you can bring more chosen rest in your life regardless.

Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed this. Please like it if you did. Let us know in the comments what your favorite restful activity is. Don’t forget to follow and subscribe before you leave if you have not already and I hope to see you next time!
