Hey guys! Welcome back. Today I wanted to talk about perfectionism and how to overcome it. Because I think in at least one area of our lives (sometimes more) we tend to think that things need to be perfect. In some ways that is a good thing because it means we are striving to be better and striving to be the very best. However, this line of thinking can hinder the way we think about ourselves. It can cause doubts that don’t necessarily need to be there. It can overall have a much more negative effect than we may realize. So here are some ways to overcome perfectionism if you are struggling.

Go for good enough.

Not everything in life is going to be perfect because you are not perfect. Sometimes it’s better to finish something that is good enough than stress yourself out about being perfect and wanting to be the very best. Doing your best is always better than being the best out of everyone else. So strive not for perfection, but doing all that you can do. In the end, that will matter the most.

Understand that you hurt yourself and others with your unrealistic expectations.

No matter how you look at it, perfection is an unrealistic expectation. Perfection is not something that you can attain. It is just an idea that helps push you further. But expecting yourself, or anyone else, to be perfect can cause you to lose relationships, jobs, and people who mean the most to you. Perfectionism pushes people away and keeps you from allowing yourself to make mistakes and grow.

Learn to enjoy the process.

If you are constantly focused on the end goal and aren’t enjoying life as you go, it can cause you to lose sight of what you are working towards. So if you are looking to give up perfectionism for good, it’s important to work on being present and appreciating where you are right now. It’s good to have goals and work towards the future, but if you lose sight of where you are right now, you will be less inclined to appreciate what you have.

Understand that you are allowed to change your mind.

Sometimes we make decisions and we feel like we are stuck in them. We make a decision to do something and we feel like we must follow through. If you have ever felt that way, then you probably understand the feeling. It’s difficult to try to explain to others that you have changed your mind. So we often get stuck in jobs, relationships, or situations that we don’t want to be in but are to afraid to get out of. So just remember that you are allowed to change your mind and make your own decisions.

Perfectionism slows down everything.

If you are wanting to move forward and grow in life, perfectionism will likely hold you back. If everything has to be perfect, you won’t be able to get many things accomplished. So if you are struggling with perfectionism, just keep in mind that it will slow down the process of finishing things and moving forward. And here is where I will remind you that sometimes good enough is perfect. Especially if it means progressing and moving forward with yourself.
