Hey guys! Welcome back. Today I wanted to share with you my weekly reflection routine. This is the routine I go through every Sunday to help me look back on the previous week and prepare for the week ahead. This really helps me get a jump start on things and ensures that I am working towards reaching my goals. This routine is something that is a major part of my success when it comes to balancing everything that I have to do. So if you are interested in my weekly reflection routine, just keep reading.
1. Review upcoming appointments.
The first thing I do when I start this process is I look at upcoming appointments I have that week. These are things that I know I have to do and that are already scheduled or need to be scheduled first. This includes class, work, meetings, and any events that I know are happening that week. Because these appointments typically cannot be changed, I know I need to schedule the rest of my week around them.
2. Brain dump tasks related to calendar appointments.
Once I know what appointments I have that week, I start making a list of everything I need to do leading up to those appointments. This includes assignments, readings, and any other preparations that need to be done. Then I start scheduling these tasks in my calendar and giving myself enough time to actually complete them. This ensures that I am also making time for these things and not scheduling anything that isn’t a priority in it’s place.
3. Review previous appointments.
The next thing I do is go back to the previous week and look at anything that is left on the calendar. Typically when I finish something I delete it from the calendar and anything left is what I did not finish that week. And as hard as I try to get everything finished in the week, I know that life happens and things come up that I can’t really control. So I leave them on the calendar to see if they can be moved.
4. Write down last week’s successes.
I think it is really important to not only look at things that didn’t get accomplished, but also look at things that were a success. From finishing an assignment early to having a successful coaching call with someone, I think there is a lot of value in acknowledging my successes and keeping track of them. This is a great way to look back and see how far I have come.
5. Write down things that were not ideal.
As I said before, sometimes life happens and things don’t always go as planned. I am human and sometimes I don’t always follow the calendar the way I should. So I always like to reflect and make note of the things that didn’t go the way I wanted them to. Maybe I got distracted to much or didn’t get up when I needed to. Maybe I skipped too many work outs or didn’t finish all of my assignments. Whatever the case, I like to make note of them so I can remember to work on them the next week.
6. Brain dump tasks that were not completed.
When I go back to the previous week’s calendar I look at all the things that were not completed. I then make a list of everything in my bullet journal so I can remember to come back to it. This allows me to go ahead and remove these items from my calendar so I don’t have to keep going back and forth. Once everything else is scheduled I can see if I have time for these things if they are important.
7. List things I “Wish I Had” Done.
These are tasks that sometimes aren’t on the calendar at all. But they are things that I wish I would have done. From working out to making my bed every morning, I always have things I wish I would have done. So I like to make a list of these things to make them a goal for the next week. I really strive to improve every week and this is a great way for me to do that.
8. Start time batching the upcoming week.
Once I have taken care of the previous week and everything I need to do there, I like to time batch my tasks for the upcoming week. So I like to try to do everything I can in one sitting so I don’t have to worry about it later. So I really strive to get each assignment I have done in one sitting with small breaks throughout. So I will batch enough time for me to complete that assignment when I can. Time batching just minimizes the distractions and the time spent wasted. If I get it all done at once I can move on to something else.
9. Review progress toward my annual goals.
This is something I only recently started doing because I have monthly goals so I sometimes forget about my annual goals. So I have started taking the time every week to track my progress and see if I am getting anywhere with my annual goals. This just helps me stay on top of everything and making sure that I know what I need to work on for the week ahead.
10. List top six priorities for Monday.
I will go more in depth about this in a future post about how I organize my to-do list, but essentially I list my top six priorities for Monday in this case. Sometimes I don’t have six, but six is the most I will go. It just helps me make sure that I am not overwhelming myself and that I am doing the best that I can do. It helps me get a jump start on having a great to-do list and starting the week off strong.
