Hey guys! Welcome back. I hope you have had a great week and weekend. Today I wanted to share with you a few things I think we all need to remember in college. As I get ready to graduate in December, there are a few things that I have learned as I reflect on these past four and a half years. I have learned so much and I wanted to share some of those things with you today. So here are some things I hope you remember during your time as a college student.
One of the biggest things I have learned throughout these past four years is how important it is to respect yourself. Not just when it comes to relationships, but also when it comes to taking care of yourself and not pushing yourself too far. Remember to eat, sleep, and have some fun. You won’t get this time back. Respect yourself enough to realize that sometimes you need a break, and then give it to yourself.
Find what motivates you beyond due dates.
Due dates are the biggest reason most of us get assignments done. However, over the past couple of years I realized that I need to find something that motivates me that’s not just a due date. Because for most things in life there are no due dates. So I had to find something that I was passionate about and really cared about so I could have the motivation that I need.
It’s okay to ask for help.
This is something that I still struggle with, but I feel as though I have made a lot of progress. I find it way easier to ask for help now than I did before. When I started college I felt the need to do everything on my own. But I quickly realized that it’s not always possible and that it’s okay to ask for help. And that’s what I hope you remember. Reach out if you need any help at all.
Kindness really does make the world go round. Always remember that you have no idea what someone is going through. So even if you think that person doesn’t deserve it, try always to be kind. You can change that person’s life without even realizing it. Kindness is so important and we could all use a little more of it in our daily lives. So wake up everyday with the goal to be as kind as possible.
Make an effort to learn.
You are in college for a reason. You are paying all that money to learn and get an education. You are there to grow. So make the effort. Do all that you can to learn, both inside and outside of the classroom. If you make the effort to learn I promise your life will change so drastically. There are so many new and exciting things to learn if you just take the time and make the effort.
It’s really easy in college to order pizza every night and never go to the gym. But take it from me, that won’t do you any favors. Do your best to be healthy. I wish I had been a little healthier. But it’s never too late to start. So start now. Start today. Be healthy. Eat healthy foods. Go to the gym or workout in your room. Take walks outside. Find exercises that you enjoy. You will thank yourself later.
Build real friendships.
This is something I learned early on and something I still believe today. It’s not about the quantity of friends you have. It’s more about the quality. If you can have 20 quality best friends then that is great. However, for me, that wasn’t really the case. For me I would rather have a tighter circle of people I know I can depend on and who can depend on me. I just feel better about the friends I have when my circle is smaller.
Be true to yourself.
Always stay true to yourself. Don’t do anything that compromises your values. Don’t do anything that you don’t feel comfortable doing. Just be authentically you. The right people and the right situations will come along. Just keep being you and when the time is right everything will work out. So don’t compromise yourself for anyone or anything that doesn’t support the kind of life you are going for.
It won’t last forever.
College won’t last forever, even though at times it feels like it might. Just remember that it’s going to end and you have to make the most of it while you can. I feel like I did that, especially these last two years. I made new friends, took on new opportunities, and I allowed myself to experience as many parts of college as I could. And I am beyond glad that I did.
It is what you make of it.
College is what you make it out to be. If you look at it negatively and always complain, that’s what it will be to you. But if you make the most out of it and try to enjoy yourself as much as possible, it will be better. So just remember that your mindset makes up so much of your college experience. So keep being positive and make the most of everyday that you have.
