Introducing Dani: A Love, Geeky Girl Contributor

By: Dani Kessel

Hi everyone!

Now that I am regularly contributing to Love, Geeky Girl, I thought I should take the time to introduce myself. I reached out online to find out what people would like to learn about me. I’m going to take this opportunity to tell you about me. In the next paragraph, I will give some basic information. After that, I will answer some questions I received. I hope you enjoy getting to know me better.

Firstly, I am a bisexual, disabled, gender non conforming woman with a sassy, sarcastic, attitude and a wicked sense of humor. I’m one of the biggest nerds you’ll ever meet. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Disney, comic books, etc. fuel my heart. I’m married to a wonderful partner who I’ve been best friends with for 10 years. He’s a Ravenclaw. I am a deeply-proud, quintessential Gryffindor. I went to school for English Writing and Psychology. I’ve been a mental health activist for 8 years. I’ve been running my own blog, Old Soul, Young Heart, for 5 years. I’ve also been singing since 3, acting since 6, and dancing since 8. My passion is the arts in most every form.

Now onto some questions and answers.

Q: What is the story behind your name?

A: I changed my name. (It will be legally official next year.) Dani is a shortened version of my old middle name. Paige, my new middle name, comes from the show Charmed. Charmed is one of my favorite shows. I’ve always admired that Paige led with her heart and that she focused on helping others. That is the kind of person I want to be

Q: Where are you from?

A: I was born and raised in the military environment, so this isn’t a simple question. I was born in Illinois but moved at 3 months and never went back. I’ve moved around 10 times. I’m currently in Denver, though I’ve lived on 3 continents. Japan was my favorite place.

Really, I’m not from anywhere, but I’ve been shaped by every place I’ve been and every person I’ve met.

Q: What’s your favorite color?

A: Blue

Q: How would you describe your fashion sense?

A: I tend to dress masculinely with a hard, rocker, punk, grunge vibe.

Q: If you had a warning label, what would it say?

A: [WARNING] This person is prone to sarcasm, pop culture references, self-sabotaging, and randomly bursting out in song.

Q: Tell me your top 5 most listened to songs on your phone.

A: Hurt Again by Julia Michaels, Everything’s Gonna Be Alright by David Lee Murphy & Kenny Chesney, How Long by Charlie Puth, Under Pressure by David Bowie, and You’ll Be Okay by A Great Big World

Q: What is your greatest achievement?

A: I have 2 greatest achievements. 1) I graduated college while going through a major medical crisis and battling mental illnesses. 2) I spent years helping raise my nieces into the caring, funny, smart, beautiful kids that they are now.

Q: What is your greatest fear?

A: I am afraid that I will never be seen as anything more than my biggest mistakes. Also, I used to be severely arachnophobic. I’m not so bad anymore, but I’m still very afraid of spiders.

Q: If you could pass any lesson onto the next generation, what would it be?

A: You have a voice, and it matters. You are allowed to express your emotions. You are allowed to have opinions. People will try to hurt you, shame you, gaslight you into keeping your mouth shut. But, it’s important to remember that you are your strongest ally, and your silence is your strongest adversary. Speak up. Don’t let anyone take your voice away.

Q: Who is your favorite Harry Potter character and why?

A: Ginny Weasley is my favorite character. I identify with her so much that I cosplay as her in full Quidditch uniform. She is a highly underrated and unappreciated. Not only is she strong and brave, she is loyal. She stands up for what she believes in. She’s got a fire inside her. And, she loves her friends. There are many more reasons (some of which I listed in this post) that Ginny is my hero in the world of Harry Potter. Overall, she is just someone I would love to be.

And lastly, Q: Why do you write?

A: When I was growing up, I was horribly bullied, experienced many traumas, and suffered from undiagnosed mental illnesses. The thing that kept me alive is reading. Reading was my safe haven; it allowed me to escape my life for just a little while. I write because I want to help others going through hard times. If I can share my experiences and wisdom and make other folks’ journeys easier, I want to do it.

So, that’s me in a nutshell. I’ve experienced a lot in my life that I’m looking forward to sharing. I enjoy reading Love, Geeky Girl, and now I’m excited to write for the site. Since this audience interacts with content often, I want to hear from you. Now that you know me a bit better, please comment down below with any specific requests on topics for my posts.

Thanks for reading!
