By: Dani Kessel

Self-care is a crucial part of maintaining a positive self-esteem and thriving state of mental health. That can come in the form of eating 3 meals a day, exercising, developing a skincare routine, putting aside time for yourself, and so many other things. The big difficulty though is that self-care can be costly. When you’re struggling to make ends meet, saving any little bit matters. So, today I am providing you with at-home face mask recipes to save you from spending more on store-bought products. The ingredients in these masks are fairly inexpensive and easy to find. Some may even be in your kitchen right now. Also, since different masks serve unique purposes, I will explain the benefits and ideal skin types for each mask recipe.

[Side note: Sam and I have differing suggestions regarding charcoal masks. Though she uses and recommends them, I will not be including any recipes with charcoal. This has become a popular trend, but charcoal masks can actually be harmful because they strip your face of necessary, protective oils. They can cause infections and scarring. You can read more on that here and here. I highly recommend you DO NOT use these kinds of masks.]

Cucumber Hydrating Mask

Ingredients:

  • Half a cucumber
  • 3 tbsp of aloe vera gel

Instructions:

Blend half of a cucumber and mix in the aloe to form a paste. Cover full face with paste. Leave on the mask for 30 minutes, then rinse.

Benefits:

This mask is ideal for folks with dry skin or those in need of a hydration boost. Cucumber contains a high water content which provides moisture. Aloe vera decreases inflammation and itching that results from dry skin.

Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal Refining Mask

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup blended pumpkin
  • ¼ cup ground oatmeal
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 ½ tsp honey

Instructions:

Combine pumpkin and oatmeal to form mask base. Mix in cinnamon and honey to form a smooth paste. Apply to face and leave on for up to 10 minutes.

Benefits:

This mask helps to minimize wrinkles and tighten pores. Avoid this mask if you have highly sensitive skin. Do not keep on longer than recommended.

Yogurt Cocoa Soothing Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients completely. Apply to your face. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.

Benefits:

This mask works best for all skin types including sensitive skin. Yoghurt soothes the skin, cocoa calms the irritation, and honey moisturizes and tightens pores. This combination of ingredients is cooling.

Brown Sugar Honey Exfoliating Mask

Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Instructions:

Mix all of the ingredients. Appearance of paste will be lumpy, not smooth. Softly scrub mask on face in circles for 1 minute. Leave on for 10 minutes then wash face.

Benefits:

This mask exfoliates the skin, leaving softer skin. It can be used for face or body. The cinnamon provides antibacterial properties, whereas the brown sugar removes any buildup of dead skin. Only use it one time a week so as not to over-exfoliate.

Tea Tree Aloe Acne Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp aloe vera gel
  • 1 drop of tea tree oil

Instructions:

Wash and dry face. Put the mixture of ingredients on face. Keep on for 10 minutes. Rinse then use your choice of moisturizers.

Benefits:

This mask specifically works for acne. Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties and help unclog pores. However, it is too harsh for your skin on its own. DO NOT use tea tree oil on it’s own! DO NOT use around pets as this can be toxic to them! The aloe’s moisturizing and calming properties prevent the tea tree oil from burning your song.

Apple Lemon Lifting Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp unsweetened applesauce

  • 1 tsp dried lavender

Instructions:

Combine ingredients. Cover face with the mask. Leave on for up to 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Apply sunscreen if going outdoors within 1 hour of using the mask.

Benefits:

This mask works best for oily to semi-oily skin. Both apple and lemon contains citric acids to remove excess oil and to brighten the face. Lavender tightens the pores and provides a slight calming effect.

Coffee Yogurt Brightening Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp coffee grounds
  • 1 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp plain yogurt

Instructions:

Mix together all ingredients. Apply paste to a clean face. Let the mask dry for 20 mins. Wash off with lukewarm water.  Apply sunscreen if going outdoors within 1 hour of using the mask.

Benefits:

This mask function well for all skin types with acne. Caffeine from the coffee grounds helps increase the blood flow for an energizing boost. Yoghurt provides moisture. Turmeric powder helps prevent and decrease acne. Note: don’t overuse turmeric in this recipe because too much can leave your skin with a slight orange tint.
