With a new year, I wanted to take some time to say something that I think is really important, especially with this fresh start. We live in an age of social media and a time when validation is everything. We live in a time when everyone would rather bend the truth and tell some lies to be liked than to just stay true to themselves. But I wanted to express the significance of being authentic and why it is so important.
We all have our insecurities. I definitely have my fair share. But I can’t choose to hide them or pretend that I am perfect just so others will like me. I used to be really afraid of being disliked by others. I feared having other people not want to be around me and not wanting to talk to me. I wanted the approval and validation that I am someone. I was so worried about being liked that I didn’t always stay true to myself. I say all of this to tell you that I am not without fault. And everything I am saying to you is what I have already said to myself.
Over time I started to realize that I should not seek the approval and validation from everyone. I shouldn’t worry what everyone thought. Because the truth is, if someone can’t accept me for my authentic self, then it is not someone I really want in my life. I have found the importance in staying true to myself and the weight that brings into any relationship with any person. If I want to have real and meaningful relationships with people, it’s time to accept who I am and really start to own it.
I have found that it is really hard to lose people in your life. However, I also know that it hurts more to sacrifice yourself and who you really are just to keep someone else happy. You lead to disappointing yourself and living an unhappy life, and I just don’t think there are many things that are worth that, especially someone who doesn’t have to be a permanent part of your life. It’s okay to let people go because they don’t like you for who you really are. I know because I have seen if you let go of the people who can’t accept you, you start to find people who really can.
You cannot be everything to everyone. It is impossible. It is also draining and very tiring to even try. So it’s time to let go of the expectations and the people pleasing and just start living your life. Figure out what you want and what is important to you and then start living your life the way you see fit. Will you make some mistakes? Yes. But so does every single person who comes into your life and tries to judge you for it. No one is perfect. But that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to make your own decisions. It doesn’t mean that you can’t live your life and just be you.
So the truth is, I am not afraid of being disliked by anyone. I am afraid of losing myself to the person I think I am supposed to be. Because that person does not exist and they will never exist. All I have is what I am. I am flawed and imperfect, but I am real. My authentic person is not always happy, not always pretty, and not always the best. But I have faith that my life is exactly what God has planned for me. I will mess up and I will make mistakes. We all will. But not being authentic is a mistake you don’t have to make.
Other people cannot accept you if you don’t first accept yourself. So it’s time to realize that it is far more important to be yourself than it is to be a version of yourself that you think other people will like. Be yourself and the right people will come into your life and never leave. I am so thankful that I have so many friends that have fully accepted me for who I am. I’m not perfect, but for them I don’t have to be. And the people in your life who are meant to be there won’t expect you to be perfect either. So start being honest with yourself and be true to yourself. You will thank yourself later.
