I Tracked My Food For A Week And Here’s What Happened

Hey guys! Welcome back. As I mentioned a while back I will be doing a new series here on the blog where I do weekly or monthly challenges and then come on here and share with you the results and what I learned. So the first one that I did was I kept a food journal all week last week. And surprisingly, I learned more than I expected to. So here is what I took away after tracking my food for an entire week.

It takes a lot of effort.

This was one thing that really surprised me. I wasn’t expecting it to take as much effort as it did. And I will explain more about why it took more effort than I thought it would as I go on into other things that I took away. But it definitely did get a bit easier as the week went on. But when you are tracking anything there are so many factors that you have to keep up with and remember.

I paid more attention to serving sizes.

When tracking your food you are obviously giving yourself a visual of what food you eat, how often you eat, and how much you eat. So throughout the week of tracking my food and keeping up with my food journal, I found that as the week went on I was much more careful about staying as close to the serving size as possible and not eating more than I needed to.

I had to decide if treats were worth it.

Throughout the week it’s really easy to grab a cookie or some chips and not think much about it. But it’s a different story when you are keeping a food journal and writing everything you eat down. It makes you really question every food choice you make and decide if you really want to put that in your journal. Sometimes it’s worth it, but sometimes you decide it’s not really worth it.

I was more mindful of why I was eating.

Eating because you’re hungry is a valid reason to be eating. Eating because you are bored, stressed, sad, or any other reason isn’t always the best choice. So throughout the week of tracking my food I found that I was much more mindful of not only what I was eating, but also why I was eating. And over the course of the week I ate less often because I ate when I was hungry and stopped when I wasn’t hungry anymore.

It’s hard to be accurate.

No one is perfect. And even in keeping a food journal you’re not always perfect. Did I write down every single thing I ate everyday? Absolutely not. But when you are tracking something like that it is really difficult to be completely accurate. And on top of that if you aren’t measuring everything to scale, it’s difficult to know exactly how much you are eating. So even though I did my best, it was never fully accurate. But I did learn a lot.
