Adulting Is Stressful. Let’s Be Kids Again!!!

By: Dani Kessel

Life is overwhelming. Our day to day routine can leave us with little opportunity to truly relax. Errands feel more like a chore than anything else. Finances and budgeting give us headaches. Sometimes, we really just need a break from the daily stresses of being an adult. The other day, I was thinking about all the fun things that most kids get to do which adults don’t. And, I came up with an idea.

Do you have a day off that you can block out? No obligations. No errands. No leaving the house. Find a solid 24 hours that you can put aside, and we’re going to be kids again for a day!

I’ve set aside Friday, but you can do this any day you want to.

Here are the day’s activities:

Wear pajamas all-day

Pick out your comfiest, fuzziest pajamas. Instead of getting dressed to go out, have a pajama day. If you have an adult onesie, even better. Wear that! I might even snag my partner’s Darth Vader onesie.

Make a peanut butter sandwich

Okay, I don’t actually like peanut butter jelly sandwiches (which is what kids eat a lot in my experience), but I do like peanut butter and honey sandwiches. I might cut it into star shapes. If you’re looking for something more creative, here are other fun ways to make a sandwich.

Color

Before your kid-for-a-day day, go buy a cheap coloring book and crayons. Find something with a fun design that you like. If you can’t find a good coloring book, print out coloring pages you find online.

Play with Playdough

Playdough lets you use your hands to create something unique. If you don’t have Playdough at home, there are lots of easy recipes you can use to make your own. Take some time to have fun with your hands.

Build a pillow and blanket fort

This is something I haven’t done since I was probably 5 years old. But, I loved it! It’s like hiding in a cave of your own creation. For those who haven’t build a pillow and blanket fort, this article gives a fun step-by-step on how to do it.

Watch an animated movie

Animated movies aren’t just for kids, but that’s often how they are marketed. There are a ton of great movie options. I’ll be putting on a Disney movie and singing on the top of my lungs or raving about Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse again. Because, why not? There are also great Dreamworks films and Miyazaki films.

Prepare popsicles

Prepare a tasty treat for yourself. All you need is an ice tray, toothpicks, and a flavored drink mix. You can even make different flavored popsicles by splitting up the tray. 4 slots of each flavor and you’ll have 3 kinds!

Blow up balloons

If you have the lung capacity, grab a cheap bag of balloons and blow them up. Using your breath will make it so they don’t float. You can play with them. You can see how many times you can bounce it in the air without it hitting the ground.

There are about a million other fun options like finger painting or having a dance party. You could climb a tree if the weather permits. (Unfortunately, I can’t because of my disability.) These are my picks for the day though. Hopefully, it will give us all a nice chance to relax. We may have to get back to our daily lives the next day, but it might be a nice mental pause.
