Why We Must Stop Letting Other People’s Opinions Control Us

Hey guys! Welcome back. Today I wanted to share something that has been on my mind for quite a while now. It is something that I think about all the time and something that I have fallen victim to more times than not. And that is that I believe that we can’t let what others think dictate our entire lives. If we do that, no one would ever really do anything because everyone always has a reason as to why we can’t do something or why we shouldn’t do something.

But I think when we give too much value to what other people think, we undervalue our true selves and we stop thinking about what we want or what we think is best. When we let other people make the decisions for us, we are not really living out our true purpose in life. It’s hard to be happy when you are too busy trying to make everyone else happy. It’s hard to live out your own dream when you are too busy trying to live out everyone else’s dream.

I have struggled with a very long time with tying my self-worth to the approval other people gave me. When they approve of what I am doing I feel great. When they disapprove of what I am doing, I don’t feel so great. I found that I wasn’t making any decisions without first consulting other people and making sure they approved of it. I wasn’t having my own thoughts because I was trying to figure out what other people would think.

It came to a point of not really knowing who I am. I didn’t know my wants, my needs, my dreams, or my goals. I was too busy fixated on what everyone else thought. I took people pleasing to a whole other level and allowed myself to get trapped in a circle of doing what other people wanted me to do. And that people pleasing led to squashing my own ideas and desires. I started conforming and molding myself into the version of me that I thought everyone else wanted me to be.

The biggest issue with that is not everyone has the same idea of what and who you should be. Everyone has a different thought, a different vision, a different plan. And it’s impossible to live out all of those because you are only one person. So the only real solution is to disappoint everyone and just do your own thing. Trust your own judgement and lean into what you know, even if you don’t have all the answers. Because the only person that can live your life is you.

When other people’s opinions become more important than yours, you start living your life on their terms. But you will be the one that lives with regret because you never did all of the things you wanted to do. And it will lead you to giving people only a shell of yourself and allowing them to fill it with whatever they would like. People will never get to see the true and authentic version of who you are. It’s important to be able to not only know who you are, but also accept who you are.

The truth is, it’s okay to be scared. It’s okay to not really have a handle on everything. It’s okay to make your own decisions and be your own person. The right people will accept that and support you. They will probably even help you along the way. Anyone who ostracizes you for any choice that is going to better your life and make you a better person is not someone that you need in your life. You deserve to surround yourself with people who lift you up and not those who tear you down.

And that is my thought on allowing other people to control your life. It is something I have had to learn the hard way, but it’s important for everyone to know. Not everyone is going to approve of every decision you make and that’s okay. What matters is not their approval, but how they react and what they do to support you even if they don’t always understand. Pay attention to how people respond to you. It will tell you everything you need to know.

Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed this. Please like it if you did. Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Don’t forget to follow before you leave if you have not already and I hope to see you next time!
